The
Lassus Scholars, named after the great virtuoso of Renaissance
polyphony, Orlande de Lassus, seek to achieve excellence in musical
expression and interpretation not only in the 16th Century polyphonic
repertoire but also in all musical styles to the present day. The
Lassus Scholars perform a wide repertoire of choral music at
many venues in Dublin including the National Concert Hall, the RDS,
The Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, the National Gallery, Adam & Eve's,
Merchants' Quay, St Kevin's Harrington St and Christ Church Cathedral.
The Lassus Scholars
have given recitals in all major Dublin recital series in recent years
including the NCH Summer Series, 2000 and 2008 and the Dun Laoghaire
Organ Series in June 2001. The repertoire ranges from Gregorian Chant to Renaissance
masterpieces such as Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli, Allegri's
Miserere and Missa Vinum Bonum by Lassus and includes mass settings
by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Beethoven and Faure. The
Lassus Scholars have also presented unusual and rarely performed
choral masterpieces in the National Concert Hall. These include Saint-Saens'
Oratorio de Noel, Puccini's Missa di Gloria and Honegger's
Une Cantate de Noel.
The Lassus Scholars
broadcast regularly on RTE television and radio and on Easter Sunday
2001 broadcast live a one-hour programme for Lyric FM's Gloria.
Since 1997 the choir has travelled abroad, grant-aided by Culture Ireland. The choir
has performed in Italy (1997), Spain (1998) and Germany (2004), the USA (Boston and New York 2000),
Moscow (July 2001) where they sang to an audience of over 4,000
at the Moscow First World Choral Congress. In June 2007 they were invited to sing at San Clemente, Rome and in March 2008 deputised for a weekend for Westminster Cathedral Choir. They will once again deputise in Westminster Cathedral on April 18th and 19th 2009.
